BAPTA是一种钙选择性螯合剂。它基本的螯合单位和EDTA类似，只是两个脂肪氮被芳香氮所替代。因此，BAPTA在生理pH下不会被质子化。BAPTA的pKa3为5.47，pKa4为6.36。这个特点显示了去质子化的步骤并不包含在Ca的螯合步骤中。由于不受质子的干扰，它的螯合率比EGTA要高很多。

BAPTA, free acid is a cell-impermeant chelator, which is a highly selective for Ca²⁺ over Mg²⁺, and it can be used to control the level of extracellular Ca²⁺. BAPTA is more selective for Ca²⁺ than EDTA and EGTA, and its metal binding is also less sensitive to pH.
